Friendly staff. Awesome food. Great setting
Service was horrible! Food was okay. They yell at you for your order as soon as you walk into the store. Literally AS SOON AS YOU WALK IN. No exaggeration on the yelling either. You could hear the Cook's in the back laughing and making fun of customers. Would not recommend.
Chili cheese fries are the best
Now down to the important part. The BBQ was bad. Not kind of bad, but really bad. We had the fish and a mixed platter. The fish was delicious, but there was no tarter sauce. It was suggested by the waitress to use the mild BBQ sauce, which was actually good. However, the rest of it, was pretty bad. The meat was tender, and seasoned well. But the sauce left a lot to be desired. In Tulsa, by default, most establishments use Head Country, but some make their own. Either way, it's good. But at Gates, it was different. First off, sauce should never automatically be poured over the meat if you offer other flavors. Secondly, lay off the black pepper. That's what a pepper shaker is for.
Service was poor our order was taken however the three people behind us had their orders made before ours was made. The beef was cold the ribs were cold and the Pepsi was flat. Not a good day for the 12th St. location. I have not given up on Gates because I know what they are capable of doing. Great food however they are not consistent.
"When in Kansas City, you've gotta try Gates BBQ." That was the advice from an employee at the Jazz Museum, so I figured he knew what he was talking about. But if this is the best KC has to offer, you need to get out more. We're from Tulsa, and we have really good BBQ available.
Gates BBQ is awesome. I used to live in Missouri and returned for Sept 2nd football game. Visited the Gates at Brooklyn. Ordering from the line is part of the fun with clerks calling back to cooks with the order. It is loud and rushed and fun. Can't go wrong with BBQ brisket or my favorite the ribs. Bring tray to your table, then get your sauces (all free), utensils, etc. Ultimate KC experience. If you want sit down, quiet, more formal go somewhere else. If you want to experience real KC BBQ and in a neighborhood environment, Gates is the place.
Overall, it was a bad experience. Maybe I'm biased, because we have really good BBQ in Tulsa.
First off, the service was bad. You are expected to place your order as you enter cafeteria style, as opposed to sit down waiter/waitress. The menu board is not completely readable from where you are expected to place your order, so you can easily have a few questions and slow things down. On top of that, the cashier seemingly rushes you through and you pay & tip before you ever get your meal. Once you get your food, you still have to get your own sauces, silverware, etc. Iced tea was bad. How do you get iced tea wrong? It tasted like Liptons from a can, but may have simply been over lemoned and too sweet. The building is nice, the bathrooms are clean, and overall, the wait staff was nice.
