An absolutely wonderful stay in a great location! The house and grounds are beautiful and well decorated - like stepping back in time. Service was impeccable from the house tour at arrival to checking out. Everyone was very kind and accommodating. Breakfast was perfect - very filling and full of unique dishes I have not had before. Walk down the block and through the park to the plaza for great dining and shopping options, or walk a block in the other direction for world class art at the Nelson Atkins. We will definitely stay here again if the opportunity arises!
This was our second time staying at Southmoreland On The Plaza and it was every bit as wonderful as our first stay. As usual Nancy was easy to communicate with and was warm, welcoming and accommodating when we arrived. She showed us to our room and ensured that we would be good and comfortable. We knew we were going to have to let ourselves in late at night and she showed us everything we needed to know to get in late. When we did finally let ourselves in, the overnight employee came and helped us put our cooler items in the refrigerator. Our room had everything we could have needed, a sparkling clean, private bathroom, with fresh smelling toiletries and white, luxurious towels. Just off of our room was a wonderful porch overlooking the yard of Southmoreland, with comfortable outdoor seating and a porch swing. On the bedside table was a beautiful bowl of fresh, crisp apples. All furniture and decor is either sturdy antique (nothing rickety or fragile) or sleek, comfortable modern. Our room had a unique antique quilt hanging on the wall with a surprisingly modern design motif. The design sense is a flawless mixture of classic and contemporary (hard to pull off, but they do seamlessly). One feels they have all that could be needed for comfort and ambiance, and yet nothing seems superfluous or out of place. We enjoyed our complementary sherry nightcap in petit cut-crystal glasses (a decanter and glasses sit on the table by the bathroom) on the porch swing before heading to bed. One must know beforehand that after a night’s stay at Southmoreland, they will be forever haunted by the most comfortable sheets in existence (all others pale in comparison). We slept peacefully and comfortably and though we had to rise early and leave before breakfast began, Nancy sent us away with our travel mugs full, and a bagged breakfast. As with our last stay, we felt pampered and cared for in the most refreshingly unfussy way. This place remains one of our absolute favorites and we cannot wait to return!
I did not actually get to stay here, as I booked for the incorrect weekend and they were fully booked for the weekend we were in town, but they were incredibly helpful and two separate people including one of the owners spent nearly half an hour helping us find another hotel, as it was an incredibly busy weekend and almost every hotel nearby was fully booked as well. They also offered us to join in the wine and cheese they were serving while we looked. If we are ever in the area again, or passing through the area, we will be sure to spend some time here, and even talked about making a trip specifically to stay here.
Super warm and charming staff, wonderful meal, cozier than hotels, great location near Country Club Plaza. Parking and driveway was a challenge for my large truck. I'd go back though!
Amazing breakfast, no seriously - OUTSTANDING! NANCY and Mark are so gracious and have a terrific inn!
