I had a similar experience as Jasmine Eddingfield, although i am sure it was not racism, but i was forced to leave due to my age, this is a story, and it is really angering and upsetting. I live near Zona Rosa and I like to go to the stores and buy things, Spencers being my favorite store in Zona. I was walking around Zona with a friend and we decided to go into Spencers and buy some funny t-shirts and look at the funny gag items in the store. I get followed when I go into stores and this is nothing new i am 16 and yes i agree that some people my age have a tendency to cause trouble so i understand the employees for having a close eye, i was not worried about being followed it was the norm for me. An employee greeted us when we walked in, very nice woman, but the other male employees with black hair, in a pompadour and a short stature was not so warm and friendly. he walked behind my friend and i the entire time we were in the store, he wasnt even trying to hide he was following us, we took a step he took a step and he was very close to us, i could have easily reached out and touched him. this was annoying yes but it was to be expected since my age. For following me i do not blame him but what he did next was appalling and aggravating. My friend and i had our t-shirts we were going to buy in hand and decided to look at the mugs and we decided we wanted a funny dragon mug and right after we decided we were done shopping, the man following us angrily raised his voice and said "you cant be here loitering, get out" it caught me off guard and for a moment i thought he was yelling at another customer until i looked up and he was looking directly at us i said "excuse me" in disbelief that an employee would be so disrespectful and he replied with, "you two have been here for over an hour, get out", by the way this statement is not true we were in the store no longer than 20 minutes. He was very loud and there was other customers in the store, and it was very embarrassing to be yelled at in a public place for no reason other than my age. He the followed with "there has been a lot of theft in the area you need to leave or you will have to deal with security". At this point i was filled with anger disbelief and embarrassment. He was so angry when the only words i said to him was excuse me, i did not say anything else to the man i just said to my friend we arent buying these and we set the items on the shelf and walked out and got some pretty cool shirts at Hot Topic, I am going to share this with everyone I know, I am local and teens are a large part of their market so Spencers, be prepared to lose a lot of customers.I will not be returning to Spencers until this employee is terminated and I can say the same for all of my friends.
I love this store. I shop here all the time, but I was just kicked out due to having a group one person higher than their limit. They have no signs posted, nothing.
Edit-- I contacted spencers corporate and they handled this problem appropriately and effectively, i am very pleased with how they treated this, they were very professional, friendly and they were just as confused and upset about this as i was, and i appreciate this.
Solid inventory!
